FIFTH AND MADISON, a four-year-old filly offered as a racing or broodmare prospect, was gaveled down to Mayday B. Branham for $135,000 at Wednesday's third session of the 2017 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. Hip No. 1118 was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
Currently possessing a mark of 6-1-1-1, $33,720, the daughter of Street Sense is out of Unaffordable, an Unbridled mare that has also reared Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Fordubai and the stakes-winning Fast Alex. Fifth and Madison also has a stakes-placed full brother named Afford. Unaffordable is herself a half-sister to Grade 3 winners Til Forbid and Hold Old Blue.
The session's only other six-figure buy was BUBBLES AND BABIES, which brought $125,000 from Josham Farms Limited, agent. The six-year-old mare by A.P. Indy was offered in foal to Street Boss on a March 22 cover.
Hip 1050, consigned by Valkyre Stud, agent, is out of the Grade 1-winning Dream Empress, by Bernstein, and is from the extended family of Grade 1 winners Prenup and Yonaguska.
On Wednesday, 197 horses sold for $3,415,900, a decline of 10.5 percent over last year's corresponding session when 220 horses brought $3,817,300. The session average was essentially flat, dropping from $17,351 to $17,340, while the median was off 5.6 percent, from $9,000 to $8,500.
After three days of trading, the sale of 581 horses has grossed $24,989,500, a drop of 18 percent over last year when $30,468,900 was realized from the sale of 595 head. The average is down 16 percent, from $51,208 to $43,011, while the median has dipped 9.1 percent, from $22,000 to $20,000.
