Hold That Tiger sires first winner
European champion HOLD THAT TIGER (Storm Cat) was represented by his first winner
at stud when his juvenile son Loveyouintheworld captured the 3RD race at
Colonial Downs on Saturday. Trained by Hamilton Smith and piloted by Malcolm
Franklin, the gelding completed the 5 1/2-furlong, firm-turf test in 1:05 to take his second
career start by 3 1/4 lengths.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Hold That Tiger began his career in fine fashion following a facile
debut score and an impressive triumph in the Railway S. (Ire-G3). The highly
thought of juvenile will likely be most remembered for his sensational tally
over a top-notch field in the 2002 Grand Criterium (Fr-G1), clinching the title
of Europe's champion two-year-old colt. Following his impressive European campaign, the Coolmore
colorbearer trekked across the pond to attempt the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1),
where a poor start and wide trip ruined his chances for a finish better than his
third-place effort. The Kentucky-bred returned to the United States near the end
of his three-year-old season, finishing
runner-up in the Woodward S. (G1) and a good fifth in the Breeders' Cup
Classic (G1) in his final start. Hold That Tiger concluded his career with a 10-3-1-1, $646,421
line.
The impeccably bred Hold That Tiger is out of stakes winner Beware of the Cat
(Caveat), making him a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 victor Editor's Note (Forty
Niner), winner of the 1996 Belmont S. (G1) and Super Derby (G1), as well as
French listed hero Catfriend (Capote). This is the same female family as Grade 1
winners Hennessy (Storm Cat), Field Cat (*Herbager), Pearl City (Carson City)
and champion Family Style (State Dinner). Beware of the Cat is also responsible
for an unnamed yearling filly by Giant's Causeway.
The seven-year-old Hold That Tiger stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles,
Kentucky, for a fee of $10,000 live foal.
