Last updated: 12/8/06 6:44 PM

Three-year-old IVAN DENISOVICH (Ire) (Danehill) has been retired from racing and will commence his breeding career at

Ireland's Coolmore Stud in 2007. His stud fee will be €9,000.

A son of Irving and Marjorie Cowan's homebred champion Hollywood Wildcat

(Kris S.), Ivan Denisovich raced

for a partnership that included Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor in addition

to the Cowans. He captured the July S. (Eng-G2) at Newmarket and was the runner-up in

the Prix Morny (Fr-G1) at Deauville at two. This year, the bay ran third in the St. James's Palace S.

(Eng-G1) at Royal Ascot and later shipped to Arlington,

where he was second to Showing Up (Strategic Mission) in the Secretariat S.

(G1).

Ivan Denisovich returned to Ireland to land the Solonoway S., but was unplaced a week later

to stablemate George Washington (Ire) in the Queen Elizabeth II S. (Eng-G1) at Ascot,

and wound up concluding his career with another trip to the states, this time to

California. He finished third behind Showing Up in the Hollywood Derby (G1), taking his lifetime mark to 14-3-3-2 with earnings of $437,399.

In addition

to being the son of a champion race mare, Ivan Denisovich is also a

three-quarter brother

to Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) hero War Chant (Danzig) as well as half to stakes winners Double Cat (Storm Cat) and Ministers Wild Cat (Deputy Minister).

"Ivan Denisovich is a magnificent-looking horse by the right sire in Danehill

and was a top-class two-year-old who also showed Group 1 form over six, eight

and 10 furlongs," said Coolmore's Christy Grassick. "He's sure to prove

extremely popular with commercial breeders."
