Juveniles set to breeze for Doncaster sale
Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Company hosts its annual Breeze-Up Sale on
Wednesday and Thursday after a day of breezing Tuesday. While this auction has not
been short of high-profile advertisements on the track in recent years, the
victory of Speciosa (Danehill Dancer) in last May's One Thousand Guineas
(Eng-G1) at Newmarket provided a notable landmark.
As the first European breeze-up graduate to win a classic, the 30,000 guineas bargain
buy took the Doncaster Breeze-Up to a new level. Alongside that pinnacle, the
achievements of Golden Jubilee S. (Eng-G1) runner-up Balthazaar's Gift (Xaar)
and Flying Childers S. (Eng-G2) scorer Wi Dud (Elnadim) over the past 12 months
further enhanced a sale that already boasted Kinnaird and Penkenna Princess
among its alumni.
As a result, the list of sires reads like a more comprehensive international
who's who than has been the case at this venue in the past. Among those featured
are Barathea (Ire), Cadeaux Genereux, Cape Cross (Ire), Danehill Dancer, Dansili
(GB), Dubai Destination, Galileo (Ire), Hawk Wing, Invincible Spirit, Marju,
Medicean, Montjeu (Ire), Noverre, Pivotal, Red Ransom and Rock of
Gibraltar (Ire), while States-based stallions with representatives include
Awesome Again, Danzig, Doneraile Court, Elusive Quality, Gulch, Hennessy,
Johannesburg, Mineshaft, Mr. Greeley and Street Cry (Ire).
For many, the centerpiece of the two days will be Hip No. 73, a Danzig
full brother to last year's dual listed scorer and Park S. (Eng-G2) third Wasseema. Consigned by Bobby and Sheila O'Ryan's Kirriemuir Stud, he fetched
$180,000 at Keeneland September.
Others with high-profile siblings include Hip 71, a colt from the first crop
of Dubai Destination whose half-brother Plea Bargain won the 2005 King Edward
VII S. (Eng-G2). He is from the draft of Willie Browne's Mocklershill Stables,
who consigned Speciosa and are responsible for the next offering as Hip 72, a
Compton Place half-sister to the multiple group-winning sprinter Pivotal Point.
Hip 49 is a Victory Gallop half-brother to the 2004 Richmond S. (Eng-G2) scorer
Montgomery's Arch from Brown Island Stables, who also consigns Hip 50, a Street
Cry half-brother to the 1996 Arlington Classic (G2) winner Trail City.
Mr. Greeley enjoyed another successful year in 2006 and supplies an
eye-catching colt offered by Powerstown Stud as Hip 7, who is out of Grade 2 scorer Gray Cashmere, while the Mocklershill draft also features
Hip 85, a son of Fayruz who is a close relation to the 2004 Golden Jubilee
winner Fayr Jag.
Speciosa's sire Danehill Dancer's offerings will be in demand and Kirriemuir
supplies Hip 139, a son of Group 3-placed Lady Digby, while long-time
Doncaster Breeze up Sale favorite Pivotal has a colt from the immediate family
of the champions Marling (Ire) and Caerwent offered by Eamon Fitzpatrick's
Kilminfoyle House Stud as Hip 175.
Hip 196 is another from Kirriemuir and is a filly by Rock of Gibraltar who
hails from the sensational family of Hasili (Ire).
All two-year-olds will breeze at Doncaster racecourse Tuesday, with selling
getting underway on Wednesday and Thursday. Full catalog and updates can be
found at www.dbsauctions.com.
