Leonard Richards
After High Limit (Maria's Mon) broke a step slow in Sunday's $300,000
Richards S. (G3) at Delaware Park, Tracy Farmer's SUN KING (Charismatic) inherited
the early lead and was never headed at any call under Rafael Bejarano, leading
the five-horse field from gate to wire for a 5 3/4-length score. The Nick Zito-conditioned
colt stopped the clock in 1:43 1/5 for 1 1/16 miles over the fast Wilmington,
Delaware, track.
The dark bay broke well and saved ground on the rail, getting the opening
quarter in :24 and the half-mile in :47 3/5. High Limit and jockey Edgar Prado
pressed the leaders through six furlongs in 1:11 2/5, but Bejarano let his
mount out a notch to maintain a head advantage turning for home. They put that
rival away after a mile in 1:36 4/5, and increased their lead through the lane
as Golden Man (Suave Prospect), third in Saturday's Long Branch Breeders' Cup S.
(G3) at Monmouth, ran on well for second in deep stretch. High Limit held third
and was followed under the line by Letterman's Humor (Distorted Humor) and Sort
It Out (Out of Place). Papi Chullo (Comeonmom) and Scrappy T (Fit to Fight) were
withdrawn.
The 5-2 second choice returned $7, $4 and $2.10 to his backers while starting
the $46.60 exacta and $76.20 trifecta. Golden Man, sent off at 7-1, paid $6.20
and $2.10 for the place while 3-5 favorite High Limit was worth $2.10 for the
show.
Bred in Kentucky by Cambridge Farm and James Daniel Conway, Sun King fetched
$400,000 at the 2003 Keeneland January Sale. Out of the winning Clever But
Costly (Clever Trick), he counts himself a half-brother to Grade 1 winner
Traitor (Crytpoclearance), multiple Grade 3 winner Ocean Drive (Belong To Me),
an unnamed two-year-old filly by
Grand Slam and a yearling filly by Street Cry (Ire). This is his second graded
stakes win after taking the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) earlier this year, and Sun King
improves his mark to 10-4-0-2 with earnings of $682,150.
