Lookin at Lucky doing well following Futurity win
|
Trainer Bob Baffert reported Sunday from Santa Anita that LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike), winner of the CashCall Futurity (G1) at Hollywood Park Saturday, and a large supporting cast of rising two-year-old stars all returned in good shape. "They all looked great," said Baffert after recording the first Hollywood Park quadruple of his career with Lookin At Lucky and three other two-year-old colts. "We exposed some real stars." Baffert began his stellar day when sending out Quiet Invader (Songandaprayer) to capture the 2ND race and saw his next winner, Tiz Chrome (Tiznow), dominate the Stuka S. by four lengths. Clutch Player (Malibu Moon) rounded out the silver-haired conditioner's first three when winning the 7TH race by four lengths, and Lookin at Lucky added the finishing touch in the CashCall Futurity. "It feels good to see a nice horse become a millionaire," Baffert said after a record fifth victory in the Grade 1 test.
Lookin at Lucky entered the CashCall Futurity having suffered his only loss when a troubled head second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) on November 7. In winning the 1 1/16-mile test, the bay colt accomplished something none of Baffert's other four Futurity winners -- Real Quiet, Captain Steve, Point Given and Pioneerof the Nile -- did. He became only the fourth horse to sweep the three biggest two-year-old stakes on the Southern California calendar: the Del Mar Futurity (G1), the Norfolk S. (G1) at Santa Anita and the CashCall Futurity.

Lookin at Lucky became the first horse to sweep the coveted triple in 17
years, since River Special in 1992. The others were Roving Boy in 1982 and Best
Pal in 1990.
"Lookin at Lucky won't run again until March," said Baffert, planning to give
the likely two-year-old champion two starts before the Kentucky Derby (G1).
