Hip No. 3024, a chestnut son of Midshipman, topped Thursday's 10th session of

the Keeneland September Yearling Sale when purchased by Midwest Thoroughbreds

for $200,000. He came from the Betz Thoroughbreds Inc., agent, consignment.

The Kentucky-bred yearling is out of the unraced Aspen Whisper (Mr. Greeley),

making him a half-brother to the dam of listed-placed What About Mary (Triano).

Aspen Whisper is herself a half-sibling to stakes diva Golden Sunray (Crafty

Prospector) and, perhaps more importantly, Mining My Own (Smart Strike).

That mare never competed on track but found success in the breeding shed as

the dam of 2009 Kentucky Derby upsetter Mine That Bird (Birdstone) and multiple

Grade 1-winning millionaire Dullahan (Even the Score).

Farther back this female family also includes champion Ambassador of Luck

(What Luck).

The highest-priced filly sold earlier Thursday for $110,000 to H.H., agent.

Consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Silver Fern Farm, Hip 2904 is by

Twirling Candy and out of Sambuca Classica (Cat Thief).

The bay miss is a half-sister to dual stakes victor Anytime Magic (Fusaichi

Pegasus), who brought $30,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The

duo's second dam is multiple Grade 1-placed stakes vixen In Her Glory (Miswaki)

and their fourth dam is Quillesian (*Princequillo), who foaled champion Revidere

(Reviewer).

Thursday's top filly counts as her fifth dam Alanesian (Polynesian),

ancestress of such notables as multiple Grade 1-winning multi-millionaire sire

Harlan's Holiday (Harlan) and sire Boldnesian.

For the 10th session, 276 horses sold for $9,376,000 at an average of $33,971

and a median of $25,000. The gross and average both increased, by 3.7 percent

and 9.4 percent, respectively, over last year when 291 were purchased for

$9,038,600 at an average of $31,060. The median remained the same.

With three days left in the sale, 2,153 yearlings have exchanged hands for

$268,795,000, a miniscule drop of 1.7 percent when compared to this point in

2013 when 2,313 had brought $273,475,100. The cumulative average has risen 5.6

percent, from $118,234 to $124,847, while the median has jumped 10.8 percent,

from $65,000 to $72,000.

The auction continues Friday and runs through Sunday with sessions beginning

daily at 10 a.m. (EDT).
