Ted Julio's NOT FOR SILVER (Not for Love) capitalized on a spirited speed

duel to annihilate his foes late in the $200,000

Carry Back S. (G2) at Calder on

Saturday. Trained by Michael Trombetta, the talented sophomore was content to

sit off the swift early splits of :21 and :44 2/5 for the opening half-mile, and

he exploded when asked for his best under Jose Lezcano to finish 4 1/2 lengths

in front on

the wire. The dark bay completed six furlongs in 1:11 4/5, and paid $10, $3.40

and $2.60 while keying the $21.20 exacta, $98 trifecta and $214.20 superfecta

(5-1-4-2) as the 4-1 third choice.

You Luckie Mann (Exchange Rate) broke slowly and was last after four furlongs

but rallied well in the lane to finish second as the even-money choice. The

favorite paid $2.60 and $2.20. Prince Joshua (First Tour) dueled for the early

lead, took a slight edge turning for home and finished with courage to earn the

black-type placing at 16-1. The third-placer was worth $4.20. Ask Joe (Najran) capped the super at 8-1 and was followed by Wall Street Wonder (City Place)

and Truest Legend (Songandaprayer).

Not for Silver, who was a fine second in the Hirsch Jacobs S. (G3) last out,

earned his first graded win in this dash to improve his career mark to 7-4-2-0,

$233,730. The Maryland-bred won the first three races of his career, capped by a

tally in the Fred "Cappy" Capossela S. in February, and he also finished second in the

Private Terms S.

Bred by Dark Hollow Farm, William H.D. deBurgh and George I.E. Harris, Not

for Silver is the first stakes scorer out of the winning Silverdew (Silver

Deputy), who also has an unraced juvenile filly named Roman Chestnut (Roman

Ruler). Silverdew is herself a daughter of dual stakes queen Dawnelo (*Grey Dawn

II), and this is the same family as Grade 3 winner Sweet Old Girl (Olden Times),

who was second in the 1975 Mother Goose S. (G1). Not for Silver sold for $32,000

as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling, then brought $85,000 as a Midlantic

two-year-old in training.
