Queen's Plate reunion in Prince of Wales

Last updated: 7/12/07 7:19 PM

Queen's Plate S. hero MIKE FOX (Giant's Causeway) will contend with some

familiar foes as he seeks the second jewel of Canada's Triple Crown, the

C$500,000 Prince of Wales S., at Fort Erie on Sunday. Five of the six sophomores

lining up in the 1 3/16-mile test are exiting the Queen's Plate.

Mike Fox sprang a 15-1 surprise in the first classic, finishing strongly to

reel in the pacesetting ALEZZANDRO (High Yield) and 6-5 favorite JIGGS COZ (Cozzene).

The Ian Black trainee hadn't tasted stakes success previously, but he had shown

real improvement to take an allowance/optional claiming event versus older

horses in his prior outing. Mike Fox won't go off at such lofty odds in the

Prince of Wales. Tabbed as the 9-5 favorite on the morning line, the bay will

break from post 5 with regular rider Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Alezzandro ran a remarkable race to finish runner-up in the Queen's Plate in

only his third career start. The Kevin Attard pupil captured his career debut

going 6 1/2 furlongs in May, then stretched out to 1 1/8 miles in the Plate

Trial S. and tired to third. With that two-turn experience under his belt,

Alezzandro moved forward in a big way in the Queen's Plate. The dark bay led

throughout, opening up a daylight margin in the stretch, only to get caught by a

half-length when growing a little weary late. Alezzandro again looms as the

controlling speed here beneath a returning Todd Kabel.

The Sid Attard-trained Jiggs Coz had a three-stakes winning streak snapped in

the Queen's Plate. After concluding his juvenile campaign with a decisive score

in the Display S., the gray kicked off 2007 with 3 1/4-length tallies in the

Queenston S. and Plate Trial. Jiggs Coz made a menacing move in the Plate, only

to flatten out as a one-paced third.

Other Plate alumni are fourth-place finisher DAAHER (Awesome Again), who had

previously broken his maiden at the expense of older horses at Belmont Park, and

sixth-placer MARCHFIELD (A.P. Indy), who was runner-up to Jiggs Coz in the Plate

Trial.

The complete field for the 72nd running of the Prince of Wales, with riders

and morning-line odds, comprises Marchfield, Patrick Husbands, 8-1; Jiggs Coz,

David Clark, 5-2; POACHERS MOON (Woodman), Chantal Sutherland, 15-1; Daaher,

Mike Luzzi, 6-1; Mike Fox; and Alezzandro, 2-1.

Each colt will carry 126 pounds.

A pair of five-furlong turf sprints will be contested on the Prince of Wales

undercard. Canadian Grade 3 hero MARCO BE GOOD (Bold N' Flashy) tops a

nine-horse field entered in the $50,000

Daryl Wells

Sr. Memorial S., while three-time stakes victress BOSSKIRI (Kiridashi) has

the class edge versus four distaffers in the $50,000

Ernie

Samuel Memorial S.
