An unusual start to the 2025 spring meet at Keeneland begins Sunday, the first of eight consecutive days of racing at the Lexington, Ky., plant after an inordinate amount of rain pelted the region this week and forced officials to postpone cards scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Friday's original opening day program will be made up on Monday and is highlighted by the Ashland (G1), a key Kentucky Oaks (G1) prep. The signature program of the meet, headed by the Blue Grass (G1), was scheduled for Saturday but will now be made up on Tuesday.
Three-year-old fillies will remain in the spotlight on opening day, only this time it will be in the $400,000 Beaumont (G2), which is run over the Beard Course of seven furlongs and 184 feet. A field of six was entered.
The early favorite is Stonestreet homebred Eclatant, who rallied to win her season debut in the Feb. 1 Forward Gal (G3) at Gulfstream over fellow Brad Cox trainee Stunner and The Queens M G, who subsequently captured the Davona Dale (G2) prior to her premature retirement.
Eclatant has won three of four, her only setback coming in the Golden Rod (G2) last November when she finished adrift of Good Cheer and Quietside, both leading candidates for the Kentucky Oaks.
Also coming in with a 3-for-4 mark is G W's Girl, who earned back-to-back stakes wins at Oaklawn over the winter in the Mockingbird and Dixie Belle, both six-furlong tests. Godolphin homebred Verify is also once beaten and enters off consecutive overnight wins over the Tapeta surface at Turfway Park.
Volleyballprincess upset the Ruthless S. at Aqueduct by 10 lengths two starts back but was a fading third in the one-mile Busher S. last out. The field is rounded out by Continuity, who hasn't raced since finishing fourth to champion Immersive in the Alcibiades (G1) last October.
The supporting feature on Sunday is the $300,000 Palisades S. for three-year-olds, a 5 1/2-furlong dash which might be hard pressed to remain on the grass as scheduled. The most accomplished contenders to date are Out On Bail, Warheart, and the filly Dreamaway, all stakes winners over the turf last season.
