Multiple Grade 2 winner SECRET GYPSY (Sea of Secrets) was sold to Teruya

Yoshida's Shadai Farm for $540,000 at Tuesday's second session of the Keeneland January

Horses of All Ages Sale in Lexington, Kentucky. It was the second session topper

in as many days gaveled down to Shadai, which bought Grade 1 winner Ave (GB) for

$1.4 million on Monday. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent, Secret Gypsy toured the

ring as Hip No. 541.

Offered as a broodmare prospect, the six-year-old Secret Gypsy recently

retired with a mark of 18-8-2-2, $596,926. Campaigned by Richland Hills Stable

and trainer Ronny Werner, Secret Gypsy was a three-time graded stakes winner,

counting the 2009 Distaff H. (G2), and 2010 Honorable Miss H. (G2) and Endine S.

(G3) among her stakes victories along with the 2008 Esplanade S. and 2010

Saylorville S. She also placed Raven Run S. (G2), Winning Colors S. (G3) and

Dogwood S. (G3), but finished 11th in the November 5 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare

Sprint (G1) in her career finale.

A daughter of the unraced Miss Utada (Rahy), Secret Gypsy hails from the

family of Irish Oaks (Ire-G1) and Italian Oaks (Ity-G1) winner Possessive Dancer

(GB) (Shareef Dancer), herself the dam of Group 3 winner Maylane (Mtoto). Secret

Gypsy's fifth dam was Irish One Thousand Guineas heroine Front Row (*Epaulette),

who produced Group 3 winners Long Row (Linacre) and Colmore Row (Mummy's Pet).

Grade 2 vixen ALPHA KITTEN (Tale of the Count), who counted the 2009 Santa

Ynez S. (G2) as her signature victory, earned a final bid of $405,000 from

Spendthrift Farm. Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent, the five-year-old gray

was offered as racing or broodmare prospect while sporting Hip 630.

Campaigned by her breeders, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss, and trained by John

Sadler, Alpha Kitten placed in four other stakes including the 2010 renewals of

the Rancho Bernardo H. (G3), Las Flores H. (G3) and Desert Stormer H., as well

as the 2008 Anoakia S. She finished sixth in the September 30 Senator Ken Maddy

H. (G3) in her most recent start, bringing her career totals to 9-2-4-1,

$227,010.

Alpha Kitten was produced by Alpha Mama (Unbridled's Song), a full sister to

2003 Matron S. (G1) winner Marylebone and a half-sister to the stakes-placed

Unigold (Silver Deputy). All were produced by the winning Desert Queen (Wavering

Monarch), a full sister to stakes winner Flicker Queen and Wavering Scene and a

half-sister to stakes winner Seen Dancing (Souvenir Copy). This is the family of

Canadian Grade 3 winner Stephanotis (Regal Classic).

After business rose at Monday's opening session, figures dove into negative

territory at the conclusion of selling Tuesday, where 205 horses sold for

$8,912,600. This represented a decline over the comparable session a year ago of

21.8 percent, when $11,401,200 was realized from the sale of 228 head. The

session average dipped 13.1 percent, from $50,005 to $43,476, while the median

remained unchanged at $20,000.

After two sessions, 392 horses have sold for $19,600,200, up 8.9 percent over

last year when 406 horses brought $17,993,800. The average has risen 12.8

percent, from $43,320 to $50,001, while the median has remained steady at

$20,000.

The five-day sale resumes Wednesday and runs through Friday, with sessions

beginning at 10 a.m. (EST) daily.
