So Many Ways meets familiar foes in Dogwood
The most accomplished of the nine three-year-old fillies in Saturday's Grade Dogwood at Churchill Downs, So Many Ways nonetheless may have something to prove as she enters the seven-furlong dash having dropped three races in a row. An undefeated juvenile when she captured the Spinaway and Schuylerville, So Many Ways lost her first two starts of 2013, but rebounded for new trainer Tom Amoss with a winning outside rally in the May 3 Eight Belles over the Dogwood course and distance. However, after running third in the Iowa Oaks in a rare attempt around two turns, the Maggi Moss-owned filly was not a major threat when fourth in both the Prioress and the Test at Saratoga, a track she had previously been dominant over. Fusaichiswonderful, a half-length second to So Many Ways in the Eight Belles, has raced only once in the interim, finishing third as the favorite in the June 29 Victory Ride at Belmont. The former Puerto Rico sensation has since moved from the barn of Todd Pletcher to the Keeneland-based Tevis McCauley. Eight Belles third-placer Irish Lute is also back in the mix here having run third in the Prioress and sixth in the Test in her last two starts. |
Several others in the field have winning form under the Twin Spires. The
lightly-raced Sky Girl broke her maiden and passed her first allowance condition
at the spring meet and was most recently third as the favorite in the Arlington
Oaks on Polytrack. Now trained by Bill Mott, the Sky Mesa filly should
appreciate the return the dirt and the cut back from nine furlongs.
Finding More, a stakes winner at Fair Grounds last winter, is a perfect
two-for-two at Churchill, including an impressive 4 1/4-length allowance tally
on June 20.
The Dogwood field is completed by multiple restricted stakes winner Guadalupe
High and the allowance-class Thetaloveandmine, Don't Tell Veda, and Elusive
Fate.
