When Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum's Tamarkuz (Speightstown) was slow

to move from post 1 in Saturday's $1 million Godolphin Mile (UAE-G2), the

favorite looked done for, especially considering that his three-race winning

streak had all come on the front end. But jockey Paul Hanagan went to Plan B,

and Tamarkuz responded to win a nail-biter over Sloane Avenue (Candy Ride).

From the yard of recently crowned U.A.E. champion trainer Musabah al Muhairi,

Tamarkuz worked himself into a decent position behind the leading group, and

rallied turning for home. He gradually wore down the tiring pacesetter

Frankyfourfingers (Sunday Break) and struck the front, only to have Sloane

Avenue uncorking a big run wider out. Tamarkuz reached for the wire and made it

first by a short head in a final time of 1:36 4/5.

"He's been so

good from the stalls lately, but this is such a big day, there's a lot to take

in," Hanagan said. "The whole occasion got to him. But he dug in so deeply. I didn't know whether

I'd won but when Frankie (Dettori on Sloane Avenue) said, 'Well done,' it made

me feel good.

"He was the strongest on the line and it was great winning one of the big

races for 'the boss'," Hanagan summed up.

"From stall 15 we

almost did the impossible," Dettori said. "I had a clean run and we made the best of it from

where I was. We just got outrun and he has run a great race."

Free Wheeling (Ad Valorem) got up for third, and Haatheq (Seeking the Gold)

was fourth. Frankyfourfingers was relegated to fifth in deep stretch.

The American shippers Prayer for Relief (Jump Start), Quadrivium (Henrythenavigator)

and Bradester (Lion Heart) were out of luck, finishing eighth, 11th and 13th,

respectively.

"I had a rough

run," Christophe Soumillon said of his passage aboard Prayer for Relief.

Jose Lezcano said of Bradester, "He jumped a step behind. He was

caught in traffic and when he got clear, the race was over."

Tamarkuz has been a revelation this Carnival. Since just being touched off by

Faulkner (Pivotal) January 8 in his return from a 10-month layoff, the

five-year-old has reeled off four consecutive wins, and a pair of track records.

He became the first horse to sweep both local preps -- the Firebreak (UAE-G3)

and Burj Nahaar (UAE-G3) -- and the Godolphin Mile, improving his record to

13-7-2-0, $964,825.

Bred by John D. Gunther in Kentucky, Tamarkuz went to his current connections

for $325,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. The chestnut is the first

registered foal fro the Lemon Drop Kid mare Without You Babe, an unraced

half-sister to multiple Grade 1 star and $1.9 million-earner Stay Thirsty (Bernardini)

and classic-placed Andromeda's Hero (Fusaichi Pegasus).
